Coconut Oil : Getting the Facts Straight !

Coconut oil could be as harmful to health as red meat and butter, according to new research published by the American Heart Association.

While coconut oil is often described as healthier than other foods containing saturated fats, the AHA has found no credible study to back up this claim. In fact, according to the conclusion of the latest study, the high saturated fat content in coconut oil is likely to raise levels of LDL blood cholesterol (know as « bad cholesterol »). It can also increase the risk of blocked arteries and heart disease.

Furthermore, the AHA’s conclusions indicate that replacing coconut oil with olive or sunflower oil could lower the risk of heart disease as effectively as statin treatment. In fact, tests show the risk is lowered by as much as 30%.

Saturated fats are generally found in meat and full-fat dairy products, as well as coconut and palm oil.
